Celebrating the life of an inspiring para-rower
The passing of para-rower, Lifa Hlongwa, brings with it the recognition of the absence of someone great. His coach shares what made Hlongwa the awesome person he was to so many.

When one thinks of mortality, more specifically their own, they may find themselves reflecting not only on the people they would leave behind, but the legacy they hope will continue in their name.
A legacy much like University of Johannesburg student and para-rower, Lifa Hlongwa, who passed away on January 7. His passion was not only found gliding across local and international waters that only his dreams could have manufactured, but through the lives he so greatly impacted through his genuine spirit.

One such a person whose life he has left an indelible mark on is UJ’s rowing club manager and coach Sizwe Ndlovu, who first met Hlongwa back in 2018. “From the moment I met Lifa, I was struck by his warmth, determination, and deep love for life. His positive attitude and unwavering resolve to overcome challenges left a lasting impression on me.”

Ndlovu describes Hlongwa’s most notable achievement being his journey as a para-rower. Citing his determination to excel in a demanding sport, despite physical challenges, spoke volumes about his character. Adding his participation in competitive rowing events demonstrated his strength and the possibilities for para-athletes in South Africa.
The paper was first introduced to the athlete in 2023 after he took part in the International Para-Rowing Regatta held in Italy, where he placed fourth. At the time he described this competition as having been one of his most memorable, as not only was it his first racing experience overseas, but he was also among some of the best para-rowers in the world.

When he was not on the waters, it was Hlongwa’s joy, humility, and perseverance that’s said to have made people naturally gravitate toward him. “He had an uplifting presence that reminded others to appreciate life and face challenges with courage and grace,” said Ndlovu. In addition to this, was his kind heart and infectious smile.
In his time of knowing him, Ndlovu saw Hlongwa succeeded in a multitude of ways. Whether it was through being a beacon of positivity and resilience – always lifting the spirits of those around him – or professionally, as a dedicated and inspiring para-rower who overcame immense odds to pursue his passion. “His commitment to his craft and his never-give-up attitude made him a role model to many.”

According to the coach, Hlongwa’s legacy is one of perseverance, courage, and inspiration. “He proved that adversity can be transformed into opportunity, and showed how sports can be a platform for empowerment and inclusion. His life will continue to motivate others to pursue their dreams, no matter the obstacles.”
To Ndlovu, Hlongwa’s life teaches us the power of resilience, the importance of optimism, and the value of hard work. Telling his story reminds us that true strength lies not just in physical ability but in the spirit to keep going when things get tough.
“He inspires us to embrace challenges and live with purpose and positivity.”
