New picture book Thuli and the Wind celebrates imagination and nature

Thuli and the Wind is a delightful new picture book that blends imagination with environmental lessons, as Thuli battles fierce winds and inspires young minds to take care of their surroundings.

A new picture book titled Thuli and the Wind is set to captivate young audiences while addressing critical environmental issues.

The story follows Thuli, a schoolgirl from Lusikisiki, who is determined to protect her garden, and those of her neighbours, from destructive winds that have intensified since local trees and bushes were cut down for firewood.

The narrative unfolds through a series of entertaining and adventurous events, leading Thuli to discover meaningful solutions to combat the fierce winds. This engaging tale not only illuminates the problem of environmental degradation but also encourages young readers to consider their role in rehabilitating their surroundings.

The book is authored by Janina Pechova, a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI). The South African branch comprises about 46 members who regularly meet to critique and support each other’s work, fostering a collaborative environment that enhances creativity.

Pechova explains that writing for children allows one to enter a world of magic. “There are no limits to using one’s imagination, which is wonderful.”

The relationship between Thuli and the Wind is central to the narrative, featuring a poignant yet whimsical dialogue that reflects the challenges she faces. A standout moment in the book is a dream sequence where Thuli hopes to bring seeds from the North Pole Seed Vault, displaying her imaginative spirit.

The book serves as a commentary on habitat destruction caused by unwise environmental practices, while highlighting the vital role school children can play in restoring ecological balance. Pechova emphasises the importance of instilling environmental consciousness in young minds.

Currently, she is working on another project about a crow seeking revenge on unkind children, only to find himself inadvertently helping them. With roots in Prague, and a long-standing connection to the Lusikisiki area, she draws inspiration from her environment.

Her illustrations, created by hand using water colours, pen and ink, and a labour of love, can take a week or longer for each piece.

She hopes to inspire a love for reading and a sense of responsibility toward the environment in the hearts of young readers with Thuli and the Wind.
