NJR Steel Westdene lends a hand for a cleaner community
By making a generous donation of three heavy-duty weed eaters, NJR Steel Westdene has assisted in empowering volunteers to take action for a cleaner Sophiatown.
On March 4, NJR Steel Westdene made a significant contribution by donating three heavy-duty weed eaters to enhance the cleaning efforts of South Africa Day.
Dr Bheki Shongwe, CEO of South Africa Day, expressed gratitude for this generous donation, stating: “We are grateful to the management of NJR Steel Westdene. Their contribution will significantly aid our mission to maintain a cleaner environment.”

The donation will enable the team to tackle overgrown grass, while the Environment Service Infrastructure Department of the City of Johannesburg (CoJ), specifically City Parks, will provide training for team members on how to effectively operate the new equipment.
Shongwe highlighted the importance of community involvement in sustaining the cleanliness of the greater Sophiatown precinct. “We are constantly engaging the community to ensure that they become part of the cleaning and beautification efforts.”

He noted that this engagement will encourage investors to come into the area, ultimately creating employment opportunities.
Additionally, there’s a commitment to collaborate closely with the CoJ, aiming to broaden the initiative’s reach to encompass more communities. The vision is clear: To foster a clean and beautiful Johannesburg, contributing to the broader goal of a clean and beautiful South Africa, added Shongwe.
As this initiative continues to grow, it symbolises community action, and a partnership that will enhance the environment, the economy, and the greater South Africa.
