According to Danny Nunes, of the MSI and CREASS Community Services, the MSI has reported a concerning trend in local crime, particularly the theft of vehicle headlights, and materials such as copper pipes and cables.
Nunes stated that their March crime statistics recorded 29 incidents, which translates to approximately one crime every 26 hours. “This is a slight increase from the 28 incidents reported in the previous month, although the difference in days also affected the crime rate ratio.”

To combat the rise in local crime trends, Nunes and the MSI team will collaborate with Beagle Watch Armed Response, who made four arrests over the past month. “They are also experimenting with long-term projects, such as: ‘Safe streets’, to enhance community safety.”
To ensure safety, Nunes advises residents to follow these steps:
• Ensure that your alarm system is functional and activated overnight,
• Get involved in community safety by reporting crimes to relevant stakeholders,
• Engage in active citizenry, as community participation is vital for crime prevention, and
• Stay connected with local sources of community communications for updates and alerts.
Nunes stressed the importance of community vigilance and co-operation in combating crime, stating: “We must all play our part in ensuring the safety of our neighbourhoods. Residents interested in learning more can visit Safe Streets Melville at: Safestreets.ilovemelville.co.za.”
