It was through the collaborative efforts of Northcliff Rotary Club, Basan South Africa and Zeda Limited that Wits University student, Kgosatsana Sithole’s dreams of owning a laptop to aid in her studies towards her honours degree in International Relations came true.

In a world, described by Ragu Govender, president of Northcliff Rotary Club, as one that often underestimates those who look different, Sithole’s journey from adversity to academic triumph emerges as a beacon of courage, perseverance and unapologetic brilliance. Govender explained Sithole was born with phocomelia – a rare congenital condition that results in shortened or absent limbs.
From a young age, Sithole is said to have been told, both directly and indirectly, that her dreams might be too big for someone such as her. This, in a world that often saw her disability before her potential. “Yet with every whispered doubt and every barrier thrown in her path, she only grew stronger,” he said.
“Today, she stands tall, not in stature, but in spirit and accomplishment as a proud graduate of Wits, holding a Bachelor of Social Science Degree, which she earned Cum Laude,” said Govender. He added that her achievement was not only academic but deeply symbolic, as it served as a declaration that disability does not mean inability. It is a testament to resilience in the face of a society that still harbours both subtle and overt forms of discrimination.

Now pursuing her honours degree, Sithole is described as more than just a student but a changemaker in the making. “She dreams of influencing global policy, advocating for inclusivity, and becoming a voice for those who are often unheard. Govender said Sithole was not waiting for the future to begin; she was already using her platform to challenge stereotypes, start conversations, and inspire others to see beyond the physical.
Still, her journey is said to be one far from easy because despite her academic excellence and relentless determination, Sithole continues to face daily challenges – not just logistical or physical, but emotional and social. “The discrimination she endures serves as a painful reminder that society still has a long way to go in embracing true diversity.”
Sithole doesn’t want people to see her based on what she lacks. “I want them to see the strength it took to get here. I want to be remembered not just as someone with a disability, but as someone who made a difference,” she said.
In Govender’s opinion, Sithole is not just rewriting her own story, she’s helping rewrite the narrative for countless others who have been told that their dreams are too far out of reach. All this, through her resilience, intellect, and unshakable resolve, proves there are no limits to what one can achieve when courage meets opportunity.
