Having played his first game at the age of eight, in 1974, Diedericks has now swapped his boots for a whistle, emphasising the impact rugby has on young players, by building a sense of camaraderie, friendship, and life lessons, which extend beyond the field.

“Rugby is a game that builds character,” he says. “It shapes young individuals into better human beings, teaching them the realities of winning and losing, which is all part of essential life lessons.”

Diedericks believes that participation in sports, specifically in rugby, provides children with skills to manoeuvre challenges and compete in life, ultimately preparing them for adulthood.

Apart from his coaching responsibilities, he also dabbles in photography on the pitch, a hobby to ease his hyperactive energy. “I have ADHD, and I cannot stand still to watch a game. Taking photos keeps my hands busy and my mind focused, allowing me to enjoy the game, while maintaining my sanity.”

He has a philosophy beyond the field as well. By being committed to understanding each player’s potential, he assists to develop them holistically. “Coaching is about guiding a player, on and off the field. At Northcliff, we strive to nurture well-rounded individuals who excel, not only in sports, but in academics as well.”

He strives not just to produce better athletes, but, more importantly, better human beings altogether. “If I can help them achieve that, then I am fulfilling my role as a coach.”
