From the outset, Wits established their hunger by applying relentless pressure on the visitors. Winger Khabonina Boshomane was the standout performer, netting two goals in quick succession to give the home side a comfortable 2-0 lead.

The away side tried to play catch-up, however, Wits continued to set the pace, with winger Boiteko Sejoe adding to the home side’s tally, making it 3-0 before halftime.

With such a resounding lead, Wits looked poised to secure the win.

The second half started with FC Raycon trying to regroup, taking a few shots at goal but not threatening the Wits goalkeeper. The home side remained in control, as they struck again, this time through a well-timed pass finding midfielder Lizza Mokoena, who slotted it home, stretching their lead to 4-0, putting the game to bed.

Wits team analyst Zunayn Jacobs was pleased with his team’s performance, noting that they have been working on getting their two-touch football correct. “Everything worked out well as we practised in training, and the victory showed that exactly. There are areas for improvement, however, especially in converting scoring opportunities, but overall I am happy with the team’s progress.”

FC Raycon’s coach Koketso Matsemela was not pleased with his side, highlighting that they started very slowly, which gave their opponents the upper hand. “We gave them too much space, especially in the middle of the pitch. There was a gap in experience with our young players against Wits’ senior squad.”

However, he remained optimistic and saw the match as a learning curve, and praised their opponent’s performance. “They were too good for us, they were defensively organised, and had a better game plan.”
