Seniors shine at first Gogo soccer tourney in Newlands

In their first inaugural soccer tournament, senior citizens featured four different regions in Johannesburg to lace up their boots and show off their skills on the pitch.

On June 20, the Department of Sports and Recreation hosted the inaugural Gogo soccer tournament at the Danie Van Zyl Recreation Centre, featuring teams from Regions B, C, D, and G. This unique event provided an opportunity for senior citizens, from grandmothers to grandfathers, to get active and engage in sports.

The tournament was a collaborative effort between the Forum, Community Development, and Sports and Recreation, with sponsorship from Generic Insurance, which provided food for the participants and medals for the winners, as well as support from the non-profit organisation STINT.
Francis Montshosi from Region C, who scored a goal in the opening match against Region B, expressed his enthusiasm for the event. “It was a good experience. Sports is a good way to get my exercise in and have some fun, I think today we showed that we are never too old to play,” he said.

Gavin Harris from Region B echoed those same sentiments by praising the organisation of the whole tournament highlighting that the senior citizens still have some vigour in showing the youth that they still have a spring in their step when it comes to getting active.
Diana Cupido, chairlady of Region B, highlighted the impressive performance of the seniors, stating, that they did very well although having lost their first match, expressed that they still had a great experience. “I hope that we get to see more matches for our senior citizens, as it keeps them active instead of sitting at home.”
The tournament was not only a chance for kicking a ball, but fostered a sense of engagement, and proved age holds no barrier on the pitch.
