SCP Security empowers students with life-saving fire safety knowledge

From 'stop, drop, and roll' to hands-on demonstrations, Northcliff Primary students received an exciting lesson in fire safety.

SCP Private Fire Search and Rescue team, led by manager Jaun Van Der Westhuizen, visited Northcliff Primary School on August 5 to educate students about fire safety and emergency preparedness.
The initiative aimed to instil a sense of awareness and responsibility among young learners regarding the dangers of fire.

During the session, Van Der Westhuizen emphasised the importance of understanding fire hazards, particularly around open flames such as gas stoves, fireplaces, and candles. “It’s crucial for learners to recognise the dangers associated with fires, and to be cautious.”

The team made the learning experience engaging by teaching students essential fire safety techniques, including the ‘stop, drop, and roll’ method, crawling under smoke to avoid inhalation, and identifying escape routes. Van Der Westhuizen noted that teaching children these skills from a young age prepares them for real-life emergencies and encourages responsible behaviour.

“My message to young learners is to conduct fire drills at home, locate different escape routes, and assign responsibilities to family members.” He encouraged families to make the process enjoyable by creating a fire escape plan together.
