Penalty appeals turned down as Highlands left empty-handed in GDL clash.

The opening half was tightly contested, but it was Wits who broke the deadlock through right winger Lulekwa ‘Skuta’ Ndima. Controlling the ball neatly on the right flank, Lulekwa powered a shot into the top corner, leaving the Highlands goalkeeper with no chance.

Highlands believed they had a way back when winger Asimbonge Ntshangase was brought down in the box by Wits goalkeeper Menzi Shozi. Their appeals for a penalty were waved away, with the referee ruling the challenge clean—much to the frustration of Highlands fans and head coach Chad Le Roux.

Le Roux was furious that his team did not get a penalty for the challenge. He was booked for his reaction by the referee, claiming the assistant referee had a clear view of the tackle.
Despite dominating possession in the first half, Highlands struggled to turn their pressure into goals. They pressed again after the restart, but Wits remained disciplined, using counterattacks and set pieces to threaten. The game was eventually put beyond doubt when Lulekwa stepped up once more, curling in a spectacular free kick to seal his brace and secure all three points for Wits.
