Miniature Festival returns to Linden

With a new competition seeing members creating a diorama from a scene in a book, this years Miniature Festival looks to wow spectators.

The Johannesburg Society of Miniature Enthusiasts (JSME) will host its Miniature Festival at Linden’s Trinity Methodist Church on October 11, and all are invited to marvel and learn more about the tiny objects this society creates, which pack enormous appeal.

This event, now in its third year, will see enthusiasts from all across the city converge to see a showcase of miniatures from bears to aeroplanes. Everything there will leave viewers feeling transfixed.

The festival will also feature an inaugural competition, which has seen society members spending months creating a scene inspired by a book. Each member received a novel at random, and from it they’ve had to create a scene incorporating the book itself in their diorama. “We need to see that they’ve used the book, creatively,” said event organiser Rika Moon.

It is Moon’s hope that people experience this society, finding out for themselves that they are a bunch of very enthusiastic, slightly unhinged, creative people. “Th group is so friendly, and so easy to get along with. We share ideas, bounce concepts off with each other, and help each other.”

This community of people meet once month at Roosevelt Park Recreation Centre. “We want people to know we’re there. We want people to come and experience us, join us, spread the word that there is this hobby.”

Moon said after last year’s big festival turnout, they expect to see the same, if not more.
