A short and concise AGM for the Melville Koppies

The annual general meeting took a brief look at challenges and success the committee had the last year.

The Melville Koppies Nature Reserve and Heritage Site held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on September 27, attended by committee members and dedicated volunteers.

One of the speakers was long-time champion of the Koppies, Wendy Carstens, who reflected on the reserve’s achievements over the past year. She highlighted the success of their joint venture with Joburg City Parks and Zoo, which, by all accounts, has been a fruitful collaboration.

Carstens also recognised the tireless efforts of the reserve’s full-time conservation team and volunteer groups, giving special mention to War on Weeders, an all-female team who spend their Sunday mornings clearing invasive weeds from the site.

She raised concerns about the growing presence of pompom weed, an invasive species threatening the biodiversity of the grasslands. The conservation team is currently working hard to manage its spread and protect the delicate ecosystem.

Carstens has been involved with the Koppies for nearly 30 years, serving as chairperson for 24 of those years. Committee member Jenny Grice noted that for many, the face of the Koppies is Carstens herself.

“Now, after years of pouring her energy into maintaining the site in countless ways, she’s easing into doing less but still staying involved through volunteering,” Grice said. She added that while the committee has big shoes to fill, they’re confident in their ability to carry the legacy forward as a strong and capable team.

The meeting also paid tribute to Wendy’s late husband, David Carstens, who was deeply woven into the fabric of the reserve’s community. One volunteer praised his vitality and commitment, recalling, “He was this amazingly fit person. I remember one day, on one of his tours, I was so impressed by his vast knowledge and the way he shared it with everyone.”
