What makes Linden the coolest in the world?

After being ranked 17th on a list of coolest neighbouhoods in the world, the Linden Community Association shares just why this was deserved.

Linden’s recent inclusion in Time Out Global’s 2025 list of the Coolest Neighbourhoods in the World came as no surprise to its residents – it simply reaffirmed what they already knew.

Ranked 17th out of 39 neighbourhoods worldwide, the Johannesburg suburb earned its spot thanks to its vibrant street culture, diverse community, and thriving local businesses.

The Linden Community Association (LCA) received news of the accolade on Heritage Day, a fitting moment, as the suburb’s streets were alive with locals and visitors enjoying the area’s many restaurants. The scent of Rembrandt Butchery’s famous boerie rolls sizzling on the braai lured pedestrians in, adding to the festive atmosphere.

Elaine Holmes, chairperson of the LCA, welcomed the recognition, calling it a boost for local businesses. “It hopefully attracts new visitors to the suburb that will result in more business,” she said. For the association, the ranking serves as motivation. “It’s testimony to our efforts paying off across various areas as we work to improve. We hope it will encourage residents and the community to get involved and stay committed to community efforts. Ultimately, a thriving suburb means a higher demand for our properties, schools, and business community.”

Holmes attributes Linden’s appeal to its inclusive and dynamic character. “Our leafy suburb is safe for young families, the elderly, and hip creatives to walk to work, school, morning coffee, or lunch,” she said. Restaurants stay busy throughout the day, and the streets are always alive, with joggers, cyclists, and people enjoying leisurely walks. Adding to the charm are the artists and creatives who feel free to express themselves, much like the pensioners who gather at the Argentinean every Monday to crochet together.

To maintain safety and community well-being, the LCA runs several initiatives focused on security and care. “Our street captains ensure that information reaches all residents quickly,” Holmes explained. “On top of this, we’ve built close relationships with the City of Joburg to address infrastructure delivery.” The association also maintains an active safety and security portfolio, working closely with appointed security companies to address petty crime and by-law issues.

Looking ahead, the LCA hopes Linden continues to attract and retain its diverse residents and preserve its unique street culture. If you find yourself in the neighbourhood soon, expect friendly faces, bustling streets, and some of the best customer service around.
