Promises run dry as Hursthill 2 reservoir repairs are yet to begin

Despite Johannesburg Water having already appointed a contractor for the repair work at the reservoir, and promising a start date of end October, work has yet to begin.

Residents of Ward 87 are growing increasingly frustrated as long-awaited repairs at the Hursthill 2 reservoir remain stalled, despite repeated promises from Johannesburg Water and city officials that work would begin weeks ago.

Ward 87 councillor Kyle Jacobs expressed deep disappointment after conducting an oversight visit to the site on November 4, alongside DA Spokesperson for Water and Sanitation Stephen Moore, only to find that the critical rehabilitation work on the reservoir itself has not yet begun.

“It’s obviously incredibly frustrating. We were told by senior management of Johannesburg Water, as well as the senior political leadership of the city, that Hursthill 2 reservoir was going to get started at the end of October, beginning of November. Yet, no actual work has commenced.”

Jacobs said that while there has been some very preliminary work on the outside of the site, the essential repairs – sealing cracks and fixing leaks within the reservoir – have not started.

Those cracks have limited the structure’s capacity, worsening the area’s water instability.

“Residents cannot continue to endure this water instability, not having running water for days and weeks on end.

It’s simply unacceptable. This should be the number one priority for the city. ”

The publication reached out to Johannesburg Water to inquire about the Hursthill 2 reservoir repairs. The article will be updated once a response has been received.
