A pantomime helps raise funds for Salvazione School
The school, based on the borders of Mayfair West and Brixton, caters to children of Slovo Park.
A pantomime hosted at Melville’s 27 Boxes did more than just bring smiles; it raised funds for some of the most vulnerable members of our community.
On October 11 and 12, Joburg Child Welfare (JCW), together with Salvazione School, presented Silent Wonder.

The one-man show was written and produced by actor Katlego Nche. Its premise was to use minimal words, allowing children of all ages to express themselves through play. “Katlego works a lot with children from special needs schools who are generally shy, abused, or have experienced trauma, and he uses such plays as therapy,” said JCW’s Chloe Tuck.

Unsurprisingly, she witnessed the children respond positively to the performance. She added that because children are all different and at varying developmental levels, Nche’s method helps them engage, even those with disabilities. “Nothing is stopping any child from getting involved in such play and enjoying it.”
Salvazione School, located on the borders of Mayfair West and Brixton, was proud to be part of the initiative. Fundraising manager Eléonore Godfroy said, “It was wonderful to be able to give access to this kind of artistic show to them.” On the first day, the audience included children from JCW and Auckland Park-based Children of Fire. The second day, dedicated to fundraising, saw a packed house of families from various communities who came to support the cause.

Godfroy shared that the school has been open for more than 30 years, primarily serving children from Slovo Park. For her, the event highlighted the importance of collaboration. “It is so important not to work in isolation,” she said. Funds raised will go toward bursaries and help keep the school’s doors open. “We do really need the support to keep them open.”

She also expressed gratitude for the ongoing support from schools such as The Ridge School, St Catherine’s School, and Auckland Park Preparatory School, all of which contribute financially to Salvazione’s mission.
