Councillor highlights Christmas traditions and gratitude toward Ward 89 residents

Zander Shawe shares his festive message with his residents, reflecting on gratitude, family, and the community he serves.

With the festive season in full cheer, Ward 89 councillor Zander Shawe is reflecting on what Christmas means to him, his family, and the diverse community he serves.

For Shawe, the season is grounded in togetherness. “Christmas is a time for family to come together and celebrate what we’re thankful for.”
As a father, the joy of the season has taken on new meaning. “For my four-year-old, it definitely means presents.”

While he’s careful not to speak on behalf of everyone, Shawe acknowledges the rich diversity of Ward 89. “My community is made up of so many different backgrounds. I can’t speak for them all, but I know they value their beliefs and traditions deeply.”

At home, the festive season is a simple and intimate experience. “We are usually home and spend the time with each other.” Shawe noted that setting up the Christmas tree and preparing gifts for his children remains a cherished annual tradition.

This year, Shawe offered a message of hope and gratitude to local residents. “I would like to thank my residents for being such wonderful and respectful people. Stay safe wherever you go and keep healthy.”

When reflecting on cherished memories, Shawe says nothing compares to his first Christmas as a father – a moment that changed the season forever. Looking ahead to how he hopes the community will unite this festive period, Shawe emphasised harmony. “With our diverse community, I would love to see everyone respect one another and live in peace.”

Although no single act of generosity stood out for him this year, Shawe said he has been inspired by the everyday decency shown by residents. “The people I’ve dealt with have been decent, and that inspires me to be decent myself.”
