VCSI member reflects on Christmas meaning and simple family festive traditions
Mahmood Bhaai Cassim shares his Christmas reflections, from cherished memories to a call for compassion, community awareness, and appreciation for essential workers.
Mahmood Bhaai Cassim, of VCSI and part of CCIN, says the Christmas period carries a special meaning for the neighbourhoods he serves – even though he does not personally celebrate the holiday. For him, its true value lies in the positivity it brings to residents. “Celebratory events are always welcomed as it puts people in a positive state of mind.” He added that he respects those who observe Christmas and offers his best wishes to them.
Cassim’s own festive season is spent in characteristically calm fashion. He prefers quiet days with family and friends, sharing easy conversation around a table, or relaxing together by the pool. Each year, one tradition stands out for him: Wishing neighbours and friends well, a gesture he believes captures the spirit of goodwill the season is meant to nurture.
A personal memory also anchors this time of year: His wedding anniversary. “We got married on Christmas Day and it always brings wonderful memories flooding back.” He joked that the holiday sometimes feels as though it was chosen just for that moment.
Cassim’s message to residents this year is one rooted in gratitude, empathy, and awareness of those who may be struggling. “In this season of joy, wishing you a blessed Christmas, with peace and happiness, surrounded by family and loved ones.” He urged people to remember those less fortunate and to share what they can, reminding the community that even a small gesture – “even if we can only afford a smile” – can carry enormous weight.
He hopes residents will rally around each other in the coming weeks, especially those unable to spend the day with loved ones because of work commitments. “To those essential workers who cannot be with their families on Christmas Day due to work commitments, let us give thanks to them for their dedication and service to the community.”
Acts of generosity have been a quiet but steady thread throughout the year. Cassim says he prefers not to list them, choosing instead to focus on humility. “There have been some very inspirational moments that have filled many hearts with joy. We don’t count them and put them out of our minds so as to remain humble. While we embrace life and the opportunities presented, we stay focused on the future.”
