Roosevelt head lauds small acts of kindness
Roosevelt High principal Cristel Venter highlights acts of kindness, and the importance of community, during this festive season.
For Cristel Venter, principal of Roosevelt High School, Christmas is a season less about decorations and more about reflection, gratitude, and kindness.
Speaking about the meaning of the festive season for herself and the community she serves, Venter said: “At Roosevelt, we serve a diverse community, and this time of year reminds us of the importance of compassion – reaching out, supporting one another, and appreciating the people who make our school and neighbourhood feel like a family.”
Venter prefers a quiet and meaningful celebration with her family, colleagues, and neighbours.

“It’s a time to pause, breathe, and spend quiet moments with those closest to me. After a busy school year, I value peace, rest, and good conversation far more than big celebrations.”
One of her most cherished traditions is a calm morning with tea, cuddles with her dogs, and the sound of laughter in the background.
“It’s those little pauses that mean the most to me.”
Reflecting on the year, Venter acknowledged the challenges faced by the school and wider community.
This year, she says, will be especially poignant as she celebrates the season without her mother, but she holds close memories of her mother’s laughter, warmth, and quiet strength. “Those memories are what make the season meaningful, even when it’s hard.”
Her message to residents, and the Roosevelt High School community, is one of hope and gratitude.

“This year has tested us in many ways, but I am deeply grateful for the resilience and heart of our community. My hope is that we all find moments of peace amid the business – to rest, to heal, and to remember that kindness still changes everything.”
She encouraged the community to show care and compassion in small ways, emphasising that true community spirit is found in acts that may go unnoticed but make a real difference.
“A kind word, a shared meal, a helping hand – these are the moments that truly matter.”
Venter was also inspired by the generosity and dedication of her staff and learners.
“I’ve seen our staff and learners rally around one another during incredibly difficult times this year – from sharing resources to offering emotional support. Those acts remind me that even when times are tough, people’s capacity for kindness is extraordinary.”
