Northcliff residents issue final warning as reckless drivers terrorise Frederick/Hearn intersection on weekends

Frustrated residents say dangerous driving, noise pollution, and spinning tyres have turned a once-quiet corner into a weekend racetrack, and they’re now drawing a line.

Northcliff residents have issued a stern warning to motorists accused of reckless and inconsiderate driving at the intersection of Frederick and Hearn drives.

They have stated that they will no longer tolerate vehicles being revved, raced, and spun in doughnuts on residential streets, turning the streets into their private racetrack and playground.

The reckless behaviour escalated over time and now poses a serious risk to road users, pedestrians, and critical infrastructure.

Two of the three vehicles accused of these actions are a Ford Mustang and a silver BMW, with no registration numbers. A third vehicle is also confirmed, however has not been identified as of yet.

Resident Andre Pieterse said the issue has persisted for nearly two years, worsening significantly over the past six months. “It’s now happening daily, particularly late afternoons on Saturdays and Sundays. I’ve nearly been driven into when coming home. It creates a dangerous situation, not only for other road users and pedestrians, but also for city infrastructure.”

Pieterse noted that the streets have become a raceway and spinning exhibition ground. Noting that once a quiet street, it is now littered with noise pollution and reckless and dangerous driving, placing lives and infrastructure at risk.

He confirmed that complaints have been lodged with JMPD, although no feedback has yet been received. Pieterse added that legal venues exist for this type of motoring activity and urged drivers to use them instead of residential roads.

As potential solutions, residents are calling for the installation of a traffic circle at the intersection, or, alternatively, visible policing over weekends, with JMPD or SAPS vehicles stationed at the corner between 16:00 and 19:00.

When asked for comment, JMPD Superintendent Xolani Fihla said that the department will verify with the regional office and revert to the publication. Their response will be updated once feedback is received.
