Emmarentia Residents Association unites community to create safer roads, clearer markings, and improved visibility
Emmarentia residents are stepping up to fund and volunteer for a new road marking project to improve safety, aesthetics, and navigation in their suburb.
The streets of Emmarentia are set to become safer, clearer, and more aesthetically pleasing, thanks to a new initiative led by the Emmarentia Residents Association (ERA).
With faded road markings and increasing pedestrian, cyclist, and runner traffic, the project aims to improve visibility, enhance safety, and galvanize the community. “Residents will immediately benefit from clearly marked roads, and we are also painting up corners to make roads more visible,” said Saber Manjoo, chairperson of ERA. “Thousands of runners, walkers, and cyclists use our roads, and this project will greatly assist them in navigating the suburb safely.”

Due to limited funds, ERA initially opted to complete a section of the suburb, hoping the impact will motivate the community to get involved and help fund the project. The overall cost for the full Emmarentia project is expected to reach R100 000. ERA, which operates solely on membership fees, will use all contributions toward achieving this target. “This project, alongside our Adopt-a-Park initiative, is a catalyst to improve the entire neighbourhood. We are aiming to enhance aesthetics, improve visibility, increase safety, and ultimately raise the value of our suburb.”
Manjoo emphasised the importance of resident participation. “Emmarentians are generous people. Our challenge is simply to make residents aware of the project and encourage contributions. I am confident that residents and businesses will step up and support this effort.”
He added that they also encourage helping hands to assist with labour as well as donations of paint.

In addition to funding, residents are encouraged to take personal responsibility for maintaining their immediate surroundings. ERA urges homeowners to tidy pavements, trim overhanging trees, and assist neighbors who may need help. “While the City of Johannesburg should handle these tasks, they are not keeping up. We must step up ourselves, or blight will take hold in our beautiful suburb.”
The ERA hopes to mobilize volunteers to help with the project and other community tasks. “We have to work together to make Emmarentia the best place to live.”
