Yoga class in Berario that costs nothing yet gives a lot
A weekly yoga class in a Berario park, hosted by teacher and biokineticist Kendra Dykman, is stretching bodies, building friendships, and breaking down barriers, all without charging a cent.
For nearly 11 years, long before wellness became a buzzword, yoga teacher Kendra Dykman has been rolling out mats under open skies in Berario park.
What began as a way to practise her teaching while still qualifying, has grown into a free, weekly ritual that now draws residents from Fairland, Berario, and Northcliff, and binds them into a quietly powerful community.
Yoga in the park has always been free. For Dykman, that choice is deliberate. “There is such huge commercialisation in the fitness and health industry.“

She added that it can feel overwhelming, with so many financial barriers. “This was my way of saying: ‘You don’t have to pay for everything to be healthy.”
Her classes, usually a gentle half Ashtanga A-B sequence that leans into a flowing vinyasa rhythm, are accessible without being passive. Beginners and beginner-intermediate students are welcome, stiffness is expected, and breaking a sweat is almost guaranteed.

The pace is slow, responsive, and rooted in who shows up on the day. Participants are encouraged to listen inwardly, finding their own drishti and rhythm, rather than chasing perfection. That philosophy is shaped by Dykman’s work as a practising biokineticist, with a strong emphasis on functional movement, body awareness, and self-connection.
Over the past 18 months, the community has grown rapidly. People linger after class, friendships have formed, and the practice extends beyond the mat. Monthly coffee catch-ups support local cafés, while group hikes and nature walks turn fitness into shared adventure.
In a world that often prices people out of wellbeing, this simple park class stands as proof that health, connection, and community can still be freely shared.
