Reader shares how she plans to choose herself in 2026

From prioritising her health to celebrating her wins and focusing on one meaningful goal, for Samantha Nkala 2026 is about growth without pressure and learning to show up for herself.

Samantha Nkala looks out on 2026, realising she seldom meets every new year with a neatly laid out plan, opting almost always to just wing it.
Even so, she he is hopeful of what the year can bring. Here is what she had to share…

I hope for better opportunities, stronger networks, and healthier, more meaningful friendships. More than anything, I hope for growth in areas that truly matter to me.

One of the biggest things I’m looking forward to in the new year is becoming healthier. I’ve reached a point where I feel uncomfortable in my own body, and that’s something I want to change. Losing weight and improving my overall health is important to me – not for perfection, but so I can feel better, stronger, and more confident. I want to show up for my life feeling good physically and mentally.

A major New Year’s resolution I don’t do often enough is celebrating myself. I’ve realised that I’m very quick to celebrate others, but when it comes to my own achievements, I brush them off as if they don’t matter. In the coming year, I want to change that. No matter how small an achievement may seem, I want to acknowledge it and give myself credit. Progress deserves recognition.

When it comes to goals, I’m being intentional about not overwhelming myself. I’ve learned that when I set too many goals and don’t reach all of them, I focus only on what I failed to do, instead of what I achieved. For 2026, my main goal is getting my driver’s license. That’s the one thing I want to accomplish, and I’m confident that focusing on it will help me succeed.

A small, but important, change I want to make in my daily routine is exercising for at least 30 minutes a day. It’s a simple habit, but I believe it will make a big difference over time.

Most importantly, in 2026 I want to grow by choosing myself more. I have dependents, and my life often revolves around their needs. While that won’t change, I want to make sure I don’t lose myself in the process.

Next year, I want to be there for me too.
