Road rage incident injures JRA worker in Linden

He was released from the hospital and is recovering at home.

A Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) worker sustained injuries while on duty in Linden on January 26 after being struck by a vehicle.

SCP Security, along with Help24 EMS, responded to the scene following the accident. SCP operations manager Jaun van der Westhuizen confirmed that the worker was transported to Milpark Hospital for further treatment.

According to JRA spokesperson Bertha Peters-Scheepers, the worker was discharged from the hospital after undergoing medical tests throughout the day. “He will remain on sick leave until next week, when he is scheduled for a follow-up check-up.”

The incident happened at the corner of 4th and 7th avenues, where the worker was part of a team painting road markings. The driver involved stopped at the scene, and a criminal case has been opened with SAPS to ensure accountability for reckless driving.

JRA chief executive officer Zweli Nyathi described the incident as a serious violation of employees’ basic human rights and a threat to the delivery of essential city services. “Our officials should be able to carry out their duties without fear of victimisation or reckless behaviour from road users. Those responsible will face the full force of the law,” he said.

The agency urged motorists to exercise caution, patience, and consideration when approaching maintenance sites.

City of Johannesburg MMC for Transport Kenny Kunene echoed the concern. “We call on the public to respect road workers and not interfere with maintenance operations. Our staff must be able to perform their duties safely while improving the city’s infrastructure,” Kunene said.

The JRA reaffirmed its commitment to staff safety and wished the injured worker a full and speedy recovery.
