Reader chooses growth over regret for 2026

With lessons learned from the past year, Joshua Mathe looks ahead to 2026 with a focus on education, self-care, and becoming a better version of himself.

When Joshua Mathe reflects on the year ahead, he does so with the desire to have a fresh start.
He tells us what he hopes the year entails.

When I think about my hopes for 2026, the first thing that comes to mind is growth. This past year didn’t turn out the way I hoped it would. There are many things I didn’t accomplish, and instead of ignoring that, I want to learn from it. My biggest priority for the new year is simple but meaningful: I want to become a better person.

Part of that growth is figuring out who I am and what I want for my future. In 2026, I want to take the time to understand myself better – what I’m interested in, what I’m good at, and where I want to go. Instead of procrastinating and putting things off, I want to start doing. Even small steps forward will be better than standing still.

Education is a big part of that journey. My New Year’s resolution for 2026 is to return to school and finish my studies. For now, that is my main goal. I know that learning will open doors for me and help me build a stronger foundation for whatever comes next. As the year unfolds, I hope to gain more clarity and confidence in my choices.
I also want to make some small but important changes to my daily routine. Last year, I didn’t take the best care of myself. I was sleeping less than I should and not eating properly. This year, I want to change that. I want to sleep more, rest properly, and allow myself time to recover and feel comfortable in my own body.

Eating better is another goal. I want to eat more, but also eat healthier – less junk food and more nutritious meals. More protein, more balance, and more intention. These may sound like small changes, but I believe they will make a big difference in how I feel and function every day.

For me, 2026 isn’t about perfection or having everything figured out. It’s about growth, self-discovery and choosing better habits. If I can end the year healthier, wiser, and more focused than I am now, then I’ll know I’ve made real progress.
