City of Johannesburg gives the thumbs up for new executive deputy mayor position

107 councillors voted in favour of the role, 87 against and 37 abstained.

The City of Johannesburg (CoJ) has approved the creation of a new position – executive deputy mayor.
The position was decided during the Council’s Ordinary Meeting on January 29.

According to the CoJ website, the results were as follows:

  • 107 voted in favour
  • 87 voted against
  • 37 abstained

CoJ clarified that the process followed national law, under the Local Government: Municipal Structures Act. “The city received guidance from the Gauteng MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Lebogang Maile, on the legal steps required to create the position. Council has now completed the required step of approving the role,” said the CoJ statement.

Moving forward, the council will elect a candidate to fill the position by following legal procedures and abiding by council rules.

The city highlighted that the new role is part of its executive leadership structure. “Once filled, the executive deputy mayor will support the mayor in carrying out responsibilities and overseeing the work of the city. The approval confirms that the city followed the proper legal process to establish the position.”
