New derby tradition born between Roosevelt High School and Hoërskool President

Both schools hope this debut derby becomes a long-standing tradition, building character, unity and sporting pride among learners.

A new sporting tradition was born this weekend as Roosevelt High School and Hoërskool President hosted their first-ever inter-school derby, a full-day showcase of rugby, netball, hockey and even chess, which drew crowds of enthusiastic learners, parents and supporters to the Roosevelt grounds.

“This is the first of many,” said Roosevelt’s head of sport, Ethan Scrooby.

“President is a strong sporting school, and today’s vibe across every field and court was incredibly positive. For our learners, these events provide the exposure and crowd support they work so hard for.”

Scrooby believes sport holds a central place in youth development. “Sport teaches discipline and resilience. You can be the best player on the day and still lose – that’s a life lesson.” Adding these opportunities helps their learners grow genuinely, on and off the field.

The sense of unity at Roosevelt stood out. “What impressed me most was how our kids backed each other,” Scrooby said. “Netball supported hockey, rugby supported chess. It showed what our headmaster always says, ‘we’re a family’.”

Next year, Hoërskool President will host as the schools begin what both sides hope becomes a long-term derby tradition.

President’s first-team rugby coach Johan Fourie also praised the day. “The reception was excellent, the grounds immaculate. For us, this was a learning curve.” One that allowed him to see exactly what they need to work on for the rest of the season.”

Fourie believes the derby builds character beyond sport. “Being in a multicultural environment teaches discipline, respect and understanding. These lessons help shape better citizens.”

Both schools agree this new derby is about far more than scores – it’s about community, growth and a shared sporting spirit.
