Celebrating 30 Years of McDonald’s South Africa
Reggie Skosana: A Legacy of Courage, Conviction, and Community

Thirty years ago, Reggie Skosana walked into a meeting he almost missed, fifteen minutes late and unaware that his life was about to change forever. At the time, he was a corporate banker in Sandton, helping finance the dreams of entrepreneurs. He had no idea he was about to become one himself -as South Africa’s first McDonald’s franchisee.
The journey began when a friend shared a newspaper advert in The Sowetan: McDonald’s was coming to South Africa. The idea seemed impossible. Reggie had only seen McDonald’s abroad, yet his entrepreneurial clients, especially one unforgettable customer, Mr. Lukujifrom Orlando, had inspired him. His words echoed: “You will never truly know your potential until you go out on your own.”

When Jim Cramer, a McDonald’s executive, flew in to meet him, he admitted he had not expected to find a Black bank manager in post-apartheid South Africa. Impressed, he invited Reggie on an evaluation trip to Auckland, New Zealand. Within weeks, Reggie was selected to train as a franchisee -but with one condition: he had to risk everything. This meant selling personal assets, convincing his wife to leave her career, and relocating their two children for nearly a year of intensive training abroad.
The process was challenging. With no safety net, failure would have meant losing everything. In New Zealand, Reggie and his family learned the business from the ground up, working grills, running shifts, and embracing the exacting McDonald’s system. It was demanding, but the experience shaped their leadership, resilience, and business acumen.
In November 1995, South Africa’s first McDonald’s opened in Johannesburg. The response was overwhelming, with customers queuing overnight to taste a Big Mac. International crews worked alongside South Africans to launch the historic store. From those early days, McDonald’s South Africa has grown to over 400 restaurants, employing thousands and serving millions.
A core focus of Reggie’s career has been people development. Many managers who began as crew members remain with him decades later, reflecting his commitment to mentorship and leadership growth. McDonald’s provided not only a career platform but also an opportunity for community impact.
During training abroad, Reggie discovered Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) and later led efforts to bring the initiative to South Africa. Today, RMHC operates two Family Rooms and a Ronald McDonald House, providing comfort to families while their children receive treatment -one of Reggie’s proudest achievements.
The journey has demanded resilience. Entrepreneurship brings long hours, uncertainty, and immense pressure, balanced with the satisfaction of building something enduring. Reggie has demonstrated that success in McDonald’s is earned through consistency, quality, and investment in people.
Over thirty years, the brand has evolved with innovations such as digital apps, while maintaining its promise of Quality, Service, Cleanliness, and Value. As McDonald’s South Africa’s first owner-operator, Reggie Skosana’s story is one of courage, vision, and impact. It stands as a testament to the power of bold decisions, belief in the impossible, and the importance of investing in people.
