Getting to know each other in Brixton
The community recently held a an event that invited all residents to come out and get to know each other.
Called ‘Love, your neighbour’, the Brixton community held an event recently that had its community members step out of the enclaves of their homes to venture out into the streets in hopes that they would get to know each other.
It was initially started during the Covid-19 lockdown with the intention that people could share with each other the surplus items that they each had that the other might need such as; extra lemons from their tree, cookies or maybe extra artwork done by a child in the neighbourhood which another person would appreciate.
“It was a socially distanced way of getting in touch,” said Sophia Weltz. Who also excitedly mentioned how great it was that now they could come together.

During lockdown, the community also fed up to 3000 people within Brixton which Weltz said was amazing, “We are not a very affluent neighbourhood I think, and to be able to do something like that involved a lot of coordination, help, as well as encouragement.”

The event, which was a bring-and-share that consisted of baked goods and tea, had the lovely accompaniment of the newly formed choir to serenade neighbours as they got to know each other better.
“I got to meet some neighbours that I had never met before, and I know a lot of people because I talk a lot. Also, I think the day has been a success because this way we make our communities better and safer, so it’s important.”

Concluding that such events are about walking across all the barriers a community may have such as race, or class.
