Singing their way through Brixton
The Local Vocals Brixton is a new choir that's formed, and they plan to serenade the community any chance they get.
The Local Vocals Brixton are singing joy back into their community one harmony at a time.
The choir, which was inspired by one in the UK, was formed in hopes that it would build similar local vocal groups in various communities, getting people together to sing.
Sharize Schaerer, the local who started it all, just wanted to create an opportunity for community building and as a way to bring some joy and fun with the skills they have. She also said it was also put together partly for mental health and well-being.

The Local Vocals Brixton’s main aim is to perform at community events. So far people have joined the choir through word of mouth and when people hear about it, they are excited to join, “I feel people are nervous and think they need to sing well to join when they don’t. There are no auditions you just need join, and we sort of learn as we go along with the skills we have,” said Schaerer.
A lover of music herself, she started this choir as she enjoys singing as it is her skill set. “There are a lot of visual things that happen in Brixton like the light festival and quilting and there is not a local music thing has started up in a community sense, so I decided to do that.”

The choir is two months old, and their first performance was at a recently held community event and the vocalists were not at all nervous. On the day they sang informally, walking to various locations and singing to people. “This was a fun way for us to go about it,” she said. Adding that now, hopefully, more people will join the choir.
Though it is still currently in its early stages, the choir has members that come from such areas as Blairgowrie and Craighall Park.
