Youth celebrated in Brixton
A community park day was recently held that encouraged youth to showcase their talents.
There are just so many ways to showcase the beauty and power of the youth in our communities.
For the Brixton community, one of those ways is bringing to the forefront the young visionaries and talented individuals that form part of this vibrant community.
On June 16, Brixton Light Festival organisers hosted an event that had, among many aspects, fashion, prizes, and a huge sense of community. This was the Youth Day Community Park Day.
The day’s aim is described as one meant to provide a platform for young individuals to showcase their talents and engage in a range of activities. From daring stunts done by the Sentech Croozers, a group of youth who ride on one-of-a-kind modified bikes. To a fashion show that had young people modelling garments done by community members. These young models stood the chance of winning ‘best dressed’ a title that ultimately went to Wandile Shabalala, who stole the show as they strut down the runway in an African-inspired dress.
It was a day that also included thrift markets, stalls, and upcycling workshops.
