Brace for the heat as Gauteng faces potential heatwave starting this Friday
Residents in Gauteng and adjacent provinces should prepare for the season's first heatwave, with soaring temperatures and fire dangers predicted from Friday through Monday.
Residents of Gauteng and several surrounding regions are being alerted to the possibility of a significant heatwave beginning this Friday, as reported by the South African Weather Service (SAWS). This weather pattern is expected to affect various provinces, including the Eastern Cape, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Free State, North West, Northern Cape, and KwaZulu-Natal.

Fire Danger Advisory
There are heightened fire risks expected across the central and north-eastern areas of the Northern Cape, southwestern portions of the Eastern Cape, and the north-eastern section of the Western Cape. Residents in these areas should exercise extra caution.
Forecast Overview
A prolonged spell of elevated temperatures is anticipated, particularly in the extreme north-eastern regions of the Eastern Cape until Sunday. From Friday onwards, similar conditions are expected in Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Free State, North West, the eastern Northern Cape, and the north-western reaches of KwaZulu-Natal. These conditions will likely endure until at least Monday.

Local Weather Conditions
For Gauteng, partly cloudy skies are anticipated, with warm conditions turning scorching, especially in the northern areas.
- Pretoria: Temperatures will range from 15°C to a high of 37°C by Sunday.
- Johannesburg: A low of 12°C is predicted to rise to about 34°C on Saturday.
- Vereeniging: The temperature will start at 13°C and could reach up to 35°C.
Safety Recommendations
In light of this impending heatwave, Robert Mulaudzi, spokesperson for the City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services, advised the public to remain vigilant about their health. He emphasised the importance of hydration and recommended avoiding direct exposure to the sun during peak hours, specifically between 11:00 and 15:00.
“Those who need to be outdoors should take breaks and hydrate frequently,” Mulaudzi noted, explaining that extreme heat can lead to conditions such as heat exhaustion or even heat stroke.
Widespread Impact
The impending heatwave isn’t limited to Gauteng. The SAWS has confirmed that other areas, including parts of Limpopo, Mpumalanga, the Free State, North West Province, the eastern sections of Northern Cape, and regions of KwaZulu-Natal, will also experience elevated temperatures starting Friday through at least Sunday.
