Heatwave safety tips for your pets
NORTHCLIFF – While your pet enjoys the outside, make sure you ensuring their safety by following these handy tips.
For this reason, the Harvey Beacon of Light Foundation has put together the following safety tips to make sure you keep your dog safe on the hottest of days.
Tips to keep your dog safe:
- Only walk your dog during cooler hours, early in the morning or late in the afternoon
- Walking in the afternoon is also gentle on their paws. Be mindful that their paws can burn.
- Never confine your dog to the car, even when the windows are open and the car is parked in the shade
- Never confine your dog to a space that does not have shade or water
- Make sure your dog always has access to plenty of clean, fresh water
- If on a walk, make sure to have a portable water bowl with you
- Know your dog’s limits and never overexert your dog
- Let your dog play in a kiddie swimming pool or shallow bath to cool down (never unattended)
- Keep your dog inside during the hottest hours – 12pm to 4pm.
