Power outage update: City Power urges residents to conserve electricity

City Power Johannesburg warns of system constraints as Hursthill SDC battles outages; residents urged to reduce consumption to prevent further disruptions.

City Power Johannesburg is currently facing significant challenges with the power system constrained due to a high volume of open calls and service disruptions. As of now, the Hursthill Service Delivery Centre (SDC) reports 74 open calls and 37 plants out of service.

Residents are cautioned to reduce their electricity consumption to mitigate the risk of overloading the system. Load reduction measures are being implemented during peak hours, specifically from 04:30 to 11:00 in the morning and from 16:30 to 23:00 at night. Areas known for high energy consumption will be prioritised, and a full schedule of load reduction blocks can be found on the City Power website.

To ensure a smooth power restoration process, City Power advises that all appliances be unplugged during an outage. This measure will help minimise inrush current when power is restored, reducing the risk of network disruptions and enhancing the reliability of the electricity supply.

City Power urges community members to collaborate actively in protecting municipal electrical infrastructure. Vigilance against crimes such as vandalism, theft, and tampering is essential to minimise outages and their impact on residents.
