Among the newly promoted black belts, two adults and two junior members, senpai Thea Wong and senpai Jaydon Shapiro, achieved their first dan in black belt.
Both junior members began their Seido journey at the tender ages of four and five respectively, and their remarkable growth into skilled martial artists has made the dojo proud. Additionally, two other candidates, who were already first dan holders, successfully earned their second dan, demonstrating their continued dedication to the art.
The newly minted black belts showcased exceptional perseverance and commitment throughout their training journey. Over the past ten months, they dedicated countless hours to rigorous practice, including additional training sessions on weekends and public holidays under the guidance of senior instructors.
Their efforts culminated in a month-long preparation for the black belt test, highlighting their determination and teamwork. “Watching them develop their unique personalities while embodying kindness and resilience has been a true honor,” said Sei Shihan George Wong, head of Seido South Africa.

“Their journey illustrates that success is attainable through hard work and dedication, regardless of the obstacles faced along the way. Essential qualities for earning a black belt include perseverance, dedication, humility, and the right attitude,” Wong remarked.
All four candidates exemplified these traits abundantly, proving that they possess the necessary attributes to succeed in their martial arts journey. Wong further noted that the dojo plays a crucial role in supporting its students, guiding them to persevere and strive for excellence.
“By helping students achieve smaller goals, the dojo fosters confidence and prepares them for significant milestones, like earning a black belt.”
Looking ahead, the Seido Karate Dojo plans to continue its comprehensive training programmes while incorporating more tournament-focused training in preparation for its upcoming 50th anniversary celebrations in New York in 2026.
As the dojo continues to nurture and develop its students, the spirit of perseverance and dedication remains at the forefront of its mission.
