Melville Koppies’ 2024 highlights
As the Koppies wrap up a successful year, the support has made a difference in their plans and will help them welcome more visitors and volunteers in 2025.
Thanks goes to the dedicated efforts of the volunteer management committee and the exceptional work of the full-time conservation team. Together, they have maintained the Melville Koppies in pristine condition, ensuring that this green oasis, in the heart of Johannesburg, remains a sanctuary for both nature and the community.
A significant factor in their success has been the generous support from the public. Donations in various forms, including special contributions, income from Sunday sessions featuring the popular 8km group hike, and private donations, have enabled them to cover essential operational costs.

Additionally, proceeds from JUNKIE’s sale of pre-loved goods, designated for Melville Koppies, and funds raised through the MySchool Woolworths programme, from ‘Friends of Melville Koppies’ cardholders, has played a crucial role in sustaining their initiatives.
As the Koppies look ahead to 2025, their aspirations are clear. “We hope to welcome lots of visitors to enjoy the therapeutic benefits of the Koppies and to unveil the exciting new projects we have planned. Furthermore, we are eager to expand our community by recruiting more volunteers to join our database of school guides, enhancing our educational offerings and outreach,” said Wendy Carstens, of the Melville Koppies.
In the spirit of the season, Carstens encourages everyone to: “Enjoy and use responsibly our green treasure in the middle of Joburg. As we celebrate the holidays, let us cherish and protect the natural beauty that surrounds us, ensuring it remains a vibrant resource for future generations.”
As they close out 2024, they extend their heartfelt gratitude to all who have supported Melville Koppies, and invite everyone to join them in nurturing this precious environment in the coming year.
