A champion of hope through art

Where art meets passion, Wenslo Mackenzie's drawings emerged from adversity, as he transforms his experiences into powerful artwork that resonates with his community and inspires hope.

Wenslo Mackenzie, a talented young artist and member of Growing Champions, shared his journey of transformation through creativity. With a passion for drawing that emerged during a pivotal time in his life, Mackenzie’s artwork reflects a deep connection to his community and a desire to inspire positive change.

His journey as an artist began at the age of 16, at a time when he was in rehabilitation for alcohol and drug abuse. It was in this challenging environment that he received his first invitation to sketch.

At the core of Mackenzie’s journey is the support from the community at Growing Champions. Having been part of the champion family for more than a decade, he credits this environment for building his character.

“Samantha Toweel-Moore helped me realise that I have artistic talent,” Mackenzie said. “Even at my lowest, God gave me the tools to rise.” This experience not only sparked his passion for drawing but also ignited a fire within him to overcome obstacles and strive for a better future.

Among his creations, his drawing of Samantha’s father, Willie Toweel, stands out as his greatest achievement. “He fought to become the greatest, allowing us at Growing Champions to reap the rewards of his hard work, and build for future generations.”

Mackenzie’s artistic expression serves as a medium to showcase his identity, cultural background, and the challenges he has faced along the way. “My art allows me to express who I am and what I stand for.”

Mackenzie believes that overcoming adversity has shaped him into a resilient and determined individual. “I have learned to adapt and persevere in difficult situations, which is a valuable trait in any aspect of life.

“My teammates and housemates believe in me and motivate me.”

He manages to balance his studies with his passion for drawing by taking regular breaks during study sessions. “These breaks allow me to do quick sketches or paintings, helping me relax and stay motivated.”

This therapeutic process not only enhances his creativity but is also an emotional outlet, capturing the spectrum of feelings he experiences.

Mackenzie concluded that children should aspire to pursue their dreams, despite their fears, and trust in their abilities. “You are capable of more than you realise. Embrace challenges and use them as stepping stones toward your goals.”
