German Seniors Residence resident shares her journey through art

Ingrid Sommer, a resident at German Senior Residence, shared her insights on her artwork, and how it is a representation of connection, through self-discovery and joy.

Amongst the residents at the German Seniors Residence is Ingrid Sommer, whose livelong passion for art bloomed at her first art gallery showcase.

The dive into her journey in the art space began in her childhood. Her parents gifted her oil paints, sparking a flame in her that she would later harness, and maintain for decades.

Whilst she embraced crafting throughout her life, she started painting in 2001. For her, there is satisfaction in creating her artwork. “If I have painted a nice picture, and I am happy with it, I will sleep very well that night. If not, I don’t.”

Her artistic expression embodies the feeling of satisfaction, while also posing a challenge to her. “They say Picasso often had a headache, and I can understand why. You can get really frustrated at it. However, it is a satisfying and wonderful hobby.”

Her work is intuitive, drawing inspiration from her environment and visual elements. “If I see something I like, or find something interesting, I just want to paint it.”

Her versatility shines through her diverse techniques and mediums. “I create art that ranges from modern, to traditional, capturing the essence of life as I see it.”

For Sommer, art serves as a therapeutic platform to express herself freely. “It is hugely important to express yourself through your art pieces. Although I do not follow a specific theme, each painting resonates deeply with my emotions. In that moment, I must feel that this is what I like, and this is what I will work on, until it shows what I see in it.”

Although aging is a factor, Sommer will not to let it stop her from pursuing what she loves. Her journey through art is a visual representation of connection, self-discovery, and joy.
