A swim to relish with Suné Liebenberg

Not even a four-year-long break from the sport could have stunted this competitive swimmer's growth or aspirations.

It was at the tender age of seven that competitive swimmer Suné Liebenberg fell in love with the water and knew, from as early as that, that swimming was the sport she had to invest her time into.

She nurtured this appreciation for the water throughout high school, as the sport gave her what she gave it – passion through discipline and a powerful sense of personal growth.

Earlier in the year, this fourth-year Wits medical student took part in the South African National Swimming Championships that were held at Newton Park Swimming Pool in Gqeberha. “My goal was simply to reconnect with the sport I love,” she said.

This need to reconnect came following her four-year-long hiatus from the sport. As in her early years of studying medicine, she hadn’t quite figured out how to balance the two. This, having come from a fairly manageable high school curriculum that allowed for flexibility, to now university, which not only came with more classes but also a demanding course.

So, coming back to compete on a national stage after stepping away for a few years made this experience even more meaningful to her. The swimmer goes into more detail about the sport in the upcoming edition of the paper, so be sure to look out for more that this ambitious swimmer has to say.
