Beagle Watch highlights growing concerns over displaced individuals
As conditions worsen at the Fairland dumpsite, community members are left feeling unsafe.
Beagle Watch has raised concerns regarding the ongoing situation at the Fairland dumpsite, which has become a gathering point for displaced individuals since its closure.
With the site now unused, both community members and Beagle Watch have observed an increase in littering and individuals overnighting near the gates of the dumpsite.

Managing director Andre Aiton described the area as a ‘pigsty,’ highlighting the distressing conditions that have developed. He noted that displaced individuals have taken to hanging their clothes on the palisade fencing to dry, further contributing to the unsightly environment.
The situation has reportedly worsened, with individuals engaging in activities such as urinating, making fires, and selling drugs in the vicinity. Aiton expressed frustration over the lack of action from local authorities, stating that despite numerous requests for updates, there has been no response from the city.
“This situation places a negative image on the community,” Aiton remarked. “The ongoing issues have created an uncomfortable atmosphere, making residents fearful to walk or shop in Fairland.”
In response to the deteriorating conditions, Beagle Watch has taken proactive measures by installing cameras and conducting regular clean-ups around the dumpsite.
The publication sent questions to the City of Johannesburg for comment; the article will be updated once it is received.
