Sadag offers assistance to those who witnessed alleged Northcliff suicide

Sadag reminds us that trauma doesn’t end at the scene, and that reaching out for help could be the first step towards healing.

Tragedy struck in Northcliff, on September 17, when an alleged suicide took place.

For many, coming across such a scene can be a deeply unsettling experience, one that lingers long after the initial shock has passed.

The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (Sadag), on September 19, emphasised the importance of emotional support and early intervention for anyone who may have witnessed, or been affected by, the incident.

Sadag operations director Cassey Chambers explained that discovering a deceased body, particularly in the case of an alleged suicide, can be profoundly traumatic, and may trigger an immediate physiological shock response.

“People may experience a racing heartbeat, rapid breathing, shaking, nausea, sweating, or even a sense of numbness as the body reacts to the trauma.”

She added that, in the hours or days following such an experience, some individuals may struggle with intrusive memories, flashbacks, anxiety, or difficulty sleeping.

“Reactions differ from person to person, but early support and debriefing – whether through talking to a trusted friend, seeking counselling, or reaching out to organisations like Sadag – can make a significant difference in coping and recovery.”

Chambers also highlighted the emotional toll of witnessing something unexpected in a public space, describing it as upsetting and unsettling.

She urged anyone affected by trauma, grief, or emotional distress to seek help, rather than suffer in silence.

Sadag, which runs South Africa’s only 24-hour suicide helpline, offers immediate assistance for those in need.

The helpline – 0800 567 567 – operates seven days a week, providing free telephone counselling, information, support, and referrals to resources across the country.
