Community steps up to repair dangerous Auckland Park pavements

Safety comes first as Melville unites to restore pedestrian walkways on Lothbury Road.

A community-driven initiative has brought long-overdue improvements to Melville, where damaged and uneven paving has posed risks to pedestrians for months.

The project, led by the Melville Security Initiative (MSI) and CREASS Community Services, was sparked after a local resident fell and sustained injuries while attempting to navigate the deteriorated sidewalk. The incident prompted swift action from the MSI and Beagle Watch, reflecting the urgent need to restore safe pedestrian access in the area.

“Residents have the right to safe passage,” according to Danny Nunes, from the MSI and CREASS. “They should be able to navigate the suburb without risk of injury.”

The work, completed last week on October 6 along the western side of Lothbury Road, between Streetly Avenue and 1st Avenue, focused on rebuilding and levelling the degraded sidewalk, to make it more pedestrian friendly.

Funding for the initiative came from the MSI, with additional support from Auckland Park businesses and residents – a reflection of the collective effort to improve everyday safety and accessibility in the neighbourhood.

The collaboration highlights the strength of community partnerships, showing how local action can make a tangible difference in enhancing public spaces and restoring a sense of security for all who live, and walk there.
