Enjoy the last storytelling for 2025 at the Melville Koppies
Storyteller, Merle Grace, plans to take guests on their last imaginative ride through Koppies for the last time this year.
The last storytelling of 2025 at Melville Koppies Nature Reserve will take place on December 7, which means it’s your last chance to have your vivid imagination come to life at this heritage site.

The event, which takes place every second Sunday of the month, is suitable for all ages and its last session of the year will see storyteller, Merle Grace tell two stories: Crocodile and the Monkey’s Heart by Gcina Mhlophe, and The Healing Snake from the Nelson Mandela Stories Collection. She plans to do what she has continuously done best atop the Koppie – captivate you as you get your mind ready for the holidays. All of this after you take a short walk up the hill to the lecture hut.

Grace has managed to add a sense of wonder to visitors, both young and old, since March. With the very first story she told there, being one that spoke of the San people and a myth of where fire comes from, she said, “I find that story is one many cultures have, which many first people have told, but I love our South African one.”
Her telling stories at the site is a way to help grow young environmentalists, as well as lovers of nature, into a generation of people who will continue to protect the site.
Outside of the storytelling, there are plenty of other activities one can choose from at this volunteer-led organisation, such as a 5km self-guided hike, a shorter heritage trail, and you could also learn about Joburg’s history, or just take a map and wander on the many paths.
