Blood drive means to unite all of Emmarentia
Residents of Emmarentia and the surrounding areas came together with one purpose – to help save lives – as they donated blood at the Emmarentia/Greenside Mosque.
The Masjid-Ur-Rahmah (Mosque) in the Emmarentia/Greenside are opened its doors recently to host an inclusive community blood drive in partnership with the South African National Blood Service (SANBS), drawing residents from Greenside, Victory Park, Westcliff, Parkhurst, and Auckland Park.
Volunteer at the mosque, and organiser, Ahmed Jassat said the mosque hopes to establish itself as a community hub, one that welcomes people from all walks of life. “We are very thankful that the SANBS agreed to come out and do a blood donation drive for all the areas.” He added that their aim is to become a space where all NPOs can come in, do their drives, and help the community at large.

Jassat said the turnout exceeded expectations. “I’m extremely happy because what I’m noticing is that people are coming in steadily. Every hour about five to 10 people come through.”
He emphasised that the mosque’s doors are open to everyone. “It’s now an area that is not specifically for Muslims.” He described it as space that is open to all religions, all races, and all communities.

When asked what he hopes the blood drive initiative instills, Jassat spoke about unity and peace. “We hope that all races, all religions, and all cultures can be one. The world is in turmoil. People are fighting over land, resources, cultures, and religions. We want to portray that we are one human race and we need to live together in peace.”

He was filled with gratitude to the volunteers, community members, and local security partners who supported the event.
