UJ dominate play but fall short against efficient Jomo Cosmos attack

The home side dominated possession and created chances, but poor finishing cost them against Jomo Cosmos in the ABC Motsepe League.

It was a rain-soaked afternoon at AW Muller Stadium on March 21 as the University of Johannesburg (UJ) fell to a narrow 0-1 defeat against Jomo Cosmos in their Gauteng ABC Motsepe League encounter.

Despite controlling large spells of the match and creating the better chances, UJ were left to rue missed opportunities as Cosmos proved more clinical when it mattered most.

UJ started brightly, with Ntokozo Mathobela at the heart of their attacking play. He nearly conjured up the opening goal with a clever short cross into the box, but striker Keletso Sekwela failed to capitalise, his heavy touch letting the opportunity slip away. Mathobela continued to trouble the opposition defence, testing the goalkeeper with a powerful effort that was well saved. The midfielder was instrumental throughout the first half, constantly creating openings and driving UJ forward.

However, for all their dominance, UJ struggled to convert possession into goals. Chance after chance went begging, with the home side unable to find the finishing touch. Cosmos, on the other hand, remained patient and disciplined, waiting for opportunities to strike on the counter.

A defensive lapse from UJ nearly proved costly when Njabulo Jele held onto the ball too long in midfield, allowing Vhugala Mulidzi to pounce. The Cosmos midfielder found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but the UJ shot-stopper produced a crucial double save to keep the score level.

The breakthrough eventually came through a moment of quality from Cosmos. Winger Rufus Sackie dazzled down the flank with a series of stepovers before delivering a driven cross into the box. Emilio Abreu met it with a diving header, putting the visitors 1-0 ahead. UJ pushed for an equaliser, but their earlier missed chances came back to haunt them. While they enjoyed more possession and created more chances, Cosmos’ efficiency ultimately made the difference.

In the end, it was a case of dominance without reward for UJ, as Jomo Cosmos walked away with all three points.
