Water security in focus as Johannesburg Water advances on Hursthill reservoir projects under tight timelines

The water utility confirms Hursthill 2 reservoir repairs are ongoing, with preparatory work completed, water supply uninterrupted, and progress at 15%.

Johannesburg Water (JW) provided an update on two key reservoir projects at Hursthill on April 9, aimed at ensuring a safe and uninterrupted water supply for surrounding communities.

JW spokesperson Nombuso Shabalala said, “For Hursthill 1, the project design has been completed. Procurement documents were finalised, the project was advertised, and the bid process closed on March 17. The Bid Evaluation Committee is currently reviewing submissions, with a planned award date of June 1.”

Meanwhile, the Hursthill 2 reservoir repairs are actively underway. “Repairs at Hursthill 2 are progressing while water supply to residents remains uninterrupted. The project includes site establishment, contractor mobilisation, and a bypass system to ensure residents continue receiving safe and reliable water throughout the repair works.”

JW managing director Ntshavheni Mukwevho acknowledged in September 2025 the deteriorating state of infrastructure across the city, saying it was outdated and in urgent need of refurbishment. He confirmed that funding for refurbishment had been prioritised in budgets passed over the past two years. He also pointed out that the bulk infrastructure serving the area is inadequate and that Johannesburg’s interconnected water system means the condition of upstream reservoirs directly affects downstream supply.

The contractor for Hursthill 2 was appointed, and all contractual processes, including the appointment of local labour, a community liaison officer, and local security SMMEs, have been completed. Preparatory work began during the builders’ break on December 15, last year, with full work commencing on January 5. Overall progress currently stands at 15%.

Key milestones already achieved include:

  • Cleaning and pressure blasting of the reservoir to expose defects – complete
  • Marking defects inside the reservoir – complete
  • Exposure of roof joints and cracks – complete

Current works in progress include:

  • Exposure of defects inside the reservoir
  • Splicing corroded reinforcement
  • Application of anti-corrosive coating on exposed reinforcement
  • Sealing of rehabilitated areas
  • Procurement of valves and associated fittings

Shabalala added that the Hursthill 2 project is scheduled to run for nine months, with expected completion by September 29. Any unforeseen delays will be communicated to the public as soon as they arise.
