Teacher aims to inspire his pupils through music
De La Salle Holy Cross College Junior School music teacher Neil Bennett shares how compassion and laughter shape young lives.
It’s the ever-changing education landscape that has been one of De La Salle Holy Cross College Junior School music teacher Neil Bennett’s greatest challenges, requiring him to constantly adapt and grow.
Despite the pressures, he maintains a strong sense of gratitude. “I remind myself how fortunate I am to be where I am.” He explained that this perspective helps him push through difficult moments. For him, teaching is about far more than lessons in the classroom; it is about nurturing young lives with compassion, humour, and purpose.

Teaching has deepened his awareness of the responsibility educators carry in shaping future generations. Beyond music, Bennett hopes to instill values of humility, compassion, love, and respect in his learners.
One learner who left a lasting impression was Daniel Van Gaalen, who bonded with Bennett over shared interests in LEGO, ukuleles, and animals. “He visited me every morning before school just to chat. I will never forget him.”
In the classroom, Bennett connects with struggling learners through empathy and humour, creating an environment where children feel supported. He describes teachers not as service providers, but as shepherds of children.

For him, the most rewarding moments are simple: Seeing pupils leave the music room smiling. Ultimately, he hopes to be remembered as a fun, silly, funny teacher who inspired a love of music, laughter, and life.
