The Vroue Landbou Unie Lente builds community and purpose for women in Linden

Through social connection, creativity, and community outreach, VLU Lente continues to empower women and support those in need.

The Vroue Landbou Unie (VLU) Lente is making a meaningful impact in Linden by creating a space where women can connect, give back, and stay active.

Chairperson Margaret Peters, a retired languages head of department from Laerskool Fontainebleau, said the organisation is more than just a social group.“It’s more a society that does things for the ladies and a lot of charity work in our community.”

The group focuses on supporting local retirement villages and organisations, often providing care packages during key times of the year. They also help the Linden Community Policing Forum (CPF).

At a monthly meeting, held on April 14, members were treated to a talk on Rooibos products, while also gaining valuable insight from the CPF on fraud awareness, particularly aimed at protecting older residents. For many members, particularly those who are retired, VLU offers both purpose and connection. “It encourages one to keep active socially and mentally,” Peters said. “You don’t want anybody to be lonely. This society tries to prevent that.”

In addition to monthly gatherings, the group hosts creative workshops ranging from painting to needlework, giving members the opportunity to learn new skills and express themselves.

Peters, now in her second term as chairperson, says the organisation has also given her renewed purpose. “I believe you’ve got to give back.”
