Teacher, Memory Mhlahlo refuses to give up on her learners

From helping struggling learners regain confidence to inspiring future teachers, Memory Mhlahlo is making a lasting impact in education.

At De La Salle Holy Cross College, teacher Memory Mhlahlo believes one of the most important things an educator can do is refuse to give up on a child – even when they have given up on themselves.

For Mhlahlo, teaching is far more than delivering lessons in a classroom. It is about helping learners rebuild confidence, overcome self-doubt and believe in their own potential. “One of the biggest challenges that has shaped me as a teacher is seeing children give up because someone told them they will never get something right,” she said.

Over the years, Mhlahlo has learned that patience and perseverance are essential qualities in education. She admits there have been moments where she doubted herself, particularly when trying to encourage struggling learners who were close to giving up. “I have pushed through by refusing to give up on any child and finding new strategies to motivate them.”

Her approach is rooted in compassion and honesty. Mhlahlo often shares her own life journey with learners to remind them that mistakes and struggles are part of growth. “I hope my students learn that they can and will make mistakes and should learn from them.”
One of her proudest moments came when a former learner followed in her footsteps and became a teacher herself, later inviting Mhlahlo to be matron of honour at her wedding. “That meant a lot to me.” While teaching can be emotionally demanding, Mhlahlo said seeing a child finally understand a difficult concept makes every challenge worthwhile. “The most rewarding part is seeing a child finally getting something correct which they were battling with.”

Grounded by faith, family and a passion for learning, Mhlahlo continues to inspire learners both academically and personally. “The teacher I hope students remember is the one who did not give up on them.”
