Clean up, win fuel and help transform Emmarentia

The Emmarentia Residents Association is calling on residents and businesses to take pride in their pavements – with rewards on offer.

A new community campaign is encouraging Emmarentia residents and businesses to roll up their sleeves and take pride in the spaces outside their properties — with a chance to win a monthly fuel voucher as an added incentive.

The initiative, launched by the Emmarentia Residents Association (ERA), aims to improve the condition of pavements throughout the suburb over the next three months.

According to ERA chairperson Saber Manjoo, most residents already do an excellent job of maintaining the areas outside their homes. However, there are still pockets of neglect that detract from the overall appearance of the suburb.
“A good-looking pavement improves the look of the suburb, enhances safety and ultimately adds value to the area,” said Manjoo.

He explained that overgrown grass, weeds and neglected verges can contribute to urban blight, while well-maintained pavements create a more welcoming environment for residents and visitors alike.
The association recently undertook a project to repaint road names on curbs throughout the area. However, some of those freshly painted names are already becoming obscured by overgrown vegetation.

Manjoo is also encouraging businesses and institutions to play their part. He praised organisations that actively maintain their surroundings while calling on others to ensure the same level of care extends beyond their gates.

Among the examples highlighted were a large premium supermarket that recently underwent a major refurbishment, local sporting institutions and other prominent organisations whose properties form part of the suburb’s landscape.

To encourage participation, ERA is offering a R500 fuel voucher every month during June, July and August. Residents with the most improved pavements, or those already maintaining exceptional pavements, can submit entries for a chance to win.

For Manjoo, the campaign is about far more than appearances. “It’s about building pride in our suburb and working together to make Emmarentia the best it can be.”
