Brixton Library redevelopment nears completion
The City of Johannesburg hopes the redevelopment will create a lasting community asset for generations to come, providing residents with improved educational, cultural, and community facilities.
Residents of Brixton can look forward to a new, modern library, forming the heart of an ambitious redevelopment project aimed at transforming the suburb’s social and community infrastructure.
According to Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) spokesperson Kenneth Nxumalo, the new Brixton Library is a key component of the broader Brixton social cluster project, which seeks to create an integrated precinct combining education, recreation, culture, and public amenities in one accessible destination.

The development includes a new library, upgraded swimming pool, public square, coffee shop, playground facilities, and improved public open spaces, designed to better serve residents of Brixton and neighbouring communities.

The existing Brixton Library was demolished to make way for a larger, purpose-built facility capable of meeting modern community needs. Nxumalo explained that the old structure was limited in both capacity and functionality, making it difficult to accommodate contemporary library services. Once completed, the new, single-storey library will span about 1 840m² and feature reading and study areas, specialised information resource spaces, modern accessibility features, and infrastructure designed to support learning and community engagement. “The facility has been designed to accommodate the growing number of users from Brixton and surrounding neighbourhoods.”

He added that public libraries remain critical community assets, providing equitable access to information, educational resources, and lifelong learning opportunities. The new library is expected to play a particularly important role for young people, by offering improved access to study spaces, educational resources, and opportunities for academic development.

Construction is progressing well, with internal finishes currently underway. Nxumalo said the project remains on track for completion during the fourth quarter of this year.
Beyond the library itself, the broader social cluster project represents part of the City of Johannesburg’s ongoing efforts to revitalise Brixton through improved social infrastructure and enhanced public spaces. “The redevelopment of the Brixton Library reflects the city’s commitment to investing in people-centred infrastructure that improves quality of life. We thank residents for their patience during construction and look forward to delivering a facility that will serve current and future generations.”
Once completed, the Brixton Library will stand apart from many other public libraries in Johannesburg through its integration into a larger precinct that combines educational, recreational, cultural, and open-space facilities in a single community-focused destination.
